ermites, water problems, a dated fireplace, and dark
paneling didn’t keep Jennifer Jefferis and Brad Woods
from envisioning their basement as a comfortable
space for relaxing and watching TV. Once they repaired
the foundation and gutters and sloped the earth away
from their 1928 cottage in Indianapolis, they waited
two years to ensure the basement was dry. Then they
created a comfortable, inviting room by removing the paneling, adding
steel studs and foam insulation, and installing drywall.
The basement’s focal point is now the fireplace wall, which the
couple revamped by covering the stone facade with drywall and
adding display shelves. A new insert converts the fireplace to gas,
while slate mosaic tiles add decorative interest around the opening
and across the wide hearth. A niche above the fireplace and hidden
wiring streamline the recessed flat-panel screen. “The best thing I did
was paint the television wall a darker color so that the screen doesn’t
look like a black hole when it’s turned off,” Jennifer says.
